Already halfway over with this semester, it's amazing how quickly each Monday comes!! The last few weeks we've been watching a lot of movies, we've learned about junking, and we learned how to add/make our own header for our blog pages (which I really enjoyed since I love playing around on Picnik). The movies covered topics such as genetically modified crops, animal factory farms, water and the effects of the plastic companies etc.
The movie that stuck out to me the most was "Fresh." It told a story of an organization called Growing Power, with a man that owned a greenhouse where all of the plants were grown organically and from his own compost filled with worms that produced nutrient-rich soil. It talks about how food that is made in such a way is so much more nutritious and tasty, while the other genetically modified crops end up losing much of the needed nutrient content. I thought it was so inspirational to see some of those farmers put so much care and work into their crops, and to share the movement with others. It also went into the scene of a farmer that raises his cattle and animals the natural way. The land and animals give back to each other, and that is the way it's meant to be. It is so wrong to see how they raise animals in factory farms. It is unnatural and the conditions are abusive.
I also thought that learning about "junking" was awesome. I've never heard about the term before, and now when I see all of the creativity that some people put into recycling and reusing items, it makes me inspired to do more of that myself. I'm excited for our junking project!
About Me
- Elly@Elly Dreams Green
- I am a Junior at the University of Minnesota Duluth. I love love LOVE the crisp smell that Fall brings, but also need the vitamin D that summer brings. I thoroughly enjoy photography and watching movies. To anyone that likes the outdoors, I'm sure we will get along quite well-- I dig fresh air :) I have a cat named Kozmo, who is quite crazy, and If it were more convenient at this time in my life, i'd have a dog as well. As you might conclude, I am an animal junky.
I also liked the farmer that raised his animals the naturally way in which the evolutionary course is taken. The things we saw in the video only touches the surface of how abusive farmers are.
ReplyDeleteFrom that movie, I did enjoy that there are still people out there who are educating others about the environment. I really like the ideas of those to people who are using earth ways to farm and grow vegetables the healthy and friendly way. I was amazed at the compost and the water system that the one guy created. I really want to visit that place!
ReplyDeleteI also wasn't too familiar with junking and am interested to learn some new ideas!
ReplyDeleteI liked that video also. I thought it was cool that they had video of the farmer advocating for organic farms. It showed he really believed in what he does. I also agree that the way he farms is how it should be done. His livestock seemed so much more colorful and lively than the livestock in the industry.
ReplyDeleteI really liked learning about "junking" as well. I never heard of it either and I think it is a really cool concept! I am excited to get started on my project!!
