About Me

My photo
I am a Junior at the University of Minnesota Duluth. I love love LOVE the crisp smell that Fall brings, but also need the vitamin D that summer brings. I thoroughly enjoy photography and watching movies. To anyone that likes the outdoors, I'm sure we will get along quite well-- I dig fresh air :) I have a cat named Kozmo, who is quite crazy, and If it were more convenient at this time in my life, i'd have a dog as well. As you might conclude, I am an animal junky.

Share & Voice: Do you give GREEN thanks?

TurkeysSo in light of the upcoming Thanksgiving holiday, I searched a little on the internet and found a quiz that you can take to see just how green your thanksgiving is. I was surprised by some of the facts that it provided, about how much energy it takes to heat the oven to cook a turkey, and about how much waste we make yearly. Take a look, and see how eco-friendly you are around this time of year.

  1. That was a great tool! The quiz mentioned that Thanksgiving is one of the most wasteful days in the year, which really put the holiday in reality check for me. I never really thought about how much waste and leftovers are accumulated and it showed on this quiz. I did not do so well on this quiz, haha. Generally the correct answer was the other answer that I was choosing from. My family hosts Thanksgiving every year so I will help host the event and will definitely make it a priority to make sure we are celebrating an eco-friendly holiday! Thanks for sharing the quiz, it was fun and informative!

  2. Unfortunately I did not do to hot on this little quiz, I only got 1 question right! I did like this quiz though because it raises awareness. I thought the question about do nothing day, as opposed to black friday was really interesting.

  3. I surprisingly did fairly well on the quiz, I was a bit thrown back when it asked how you save major energy and All the above were correct. I really like the idea of "Buy nothing day"! Everyone puts so much energy into black friday and it's not good for the economy, we should start the buy nothing day trend here in the states!

  4. I had NO idea that turkeys could run 24mph and fly 55mph!! That's so crazy! I also like the idea of buy nothing day. There have actually been people who die because of the crazy shopping that goes on. I think that even though people save money these days, they are not necessarily doing the environment any good. Most of the products purchased the day after Thanksgiving are packaged with a lot of plastic. Let's try to find alternatives!

  5. Wild Turkeys can FLY? That is interesting. I got 60%. It says, "You're usually an eco-pioneer but sometimes you forget your roots." That's true. There are times when I forget and there are some things I don't know. So this was fun to do and learn from.

  6. This was a very informative quiz. I was kind of shocked to find out that Americans waste 27% of food each year! That seems like so much! The sad part is most of it was probably good food that was just thrown away rather than kept for leftovers. Although I see how Thanksgiving can be extremely wasteful I feel as though its not always bad. My family always gets together and at the end all the left overs are distributed so none of them goes to waste. Yes, some extra electricity is used, but we don't waste the food, we use cloth napkins, and use the dishwasher rather than hand wash the dishes. (which actually wastes more water than putting them in the dishwasher!)I also agree the "buy nothing day" is a good idea but I don't think many stores would go along with it because the enormous amount of revenue they bring in on this day each year.

  7. I sadly did not do very well on this quiz! I thought it was interesting that if everyone used a cloth napkin on Thanksgiving instead of a paper one that 1 million trees would be saved! That's a LOT of trees from a small change during our day!
